History/Overview
In Land Rover parlance, the Sport label denotes a smaller, more affordable version of one of the brand’s SUVs. In this case, the Range Rover Sport is a step down from the flagship Range Rover. It may be smaller in size and price, but the Range Rover Sport gives up little in terms of luxury and performance. The current model dates back to a 2014 redesign.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
For 2022, Land Rover hasn’t done much to the Range Rover Sport. The most significant change is the discontinuation of the diesel TDv6 powertrain. Land Rover says the PHEV powertrain will not be offered this year, but doesn’t say it’s gone for good.
Available Trims
Land Rover offers the Range Rover Sport in SE, HSE, HST, HST Dynamic, Autobiography Dynamic, SVR, and SVR Carbon Edition trims. Engine choices are a 3.0L turbo six-cylinder with mild hybrid assist, and a 5.0L supercharged V8. Both come with 4WD and an eight-speed transmission.
Standard Features
In SE trim, the Range Rover Sport comes with air suspension, fixed panoramic roof, auto-dimming/power-folding side mirrors, LED headlights with washers, and 19-inch wheels.
Inside, you get 14-way front seats, leather upholstery, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming mirror, two-zone A/C, digital gauges, two 10-inch infotainment displays, and navigation.
The standard safety suite comprises rain-sensing wipers, forward collision mitigation, lane keep assist, and front and rear parking aids.
HSE trim brings a sliding panoramic sunroof, fog lights, automatic high beams, 21-inch wheels, ventilated front and heated rear seats, a front console fridge, 16-way front seats, Windsor leather, four-zone A/C, blind spot monitor, 360-degree parking sensors, rear traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, clear exit monitor, and driver condition monitoring.
HST models add configurable/adaptive dynamics, terrain response, black roof and exterior styling cues, suede steering wheel, and a downgrade to three-zone A/C.
V8 models start with the P525 HSE Dynamic, which builds on HSE V6 models with a two-speed transfer case, adaptive/configurable dynamics, active differential with torque vectoring, air suspension with dynamic response, extended leather, and a downgrade to two-zone A/C, no automatic high beams, and no fridge.
Autobiography Dynamic brings back automatic high beams and three-zone A/C, and adds 22-way front seats, configurable ambient lighting, soft-close doors, surround-sound audio, and 360-degree cameras.
SVR gains sport suspension and performance seats, but drops the soft-close doors and front-seat ventilation.
Finally, SVR Carbon Edition gets 22-inch wheels, various carbon fibre trim pieces, and a hands-free tailgate.
Key Options
A drive package for SE trim adds blind spot monitoring, driver condition monitor, and traffic sign recognition. All trims can add a drive pro pack of high-speed emergency braking, blind spot assist, and adaptive cruise. A driver assist group brings park assist, 360-degree cameras and parking aid, clear exit monitor, rear traffic monitor, and traffic sign recognition. You can also get a park pack of clear exit monitor, 360-degree parking aid, and rear traffic monitor.
A climate comfort package brings a sliding roof, upgraded sun visors, console fridge, and four-zone A/C.
An off-road group bundles low-range gearing, all-terrain progress control, and terrain response. The tow pack gets you advanced towing assist, a hitch receiver, and an activity key. Finally, the vision assist group has automatic high beams, configurable ambient lighting, head-up display, and fog lights.
Fuel Economy
Fuel consumption estimates are 12.7/9.9 L/100 km (city/highway) for six-cylinder MHEV models; 14.1/10.7 L/100 km for P525 V8 models; and 16.2/12.0 in SVR trim.
Competition
With the Range Rover Sport, Land Rover competes for buyers with the BMW X5, Genesis GV80, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8, Maserati Levante, and Volvo XC90.
